Reader Plans: Add Subscription Paywalls to WordPress Articles

Subscription access and article paywalls

Reader Plans lets creators offer subscription or membership access to selected WordPress articles. Add the codoc block where the free preview should end: content above it stays visible to visitors, while content below it is hidden from non-buyers. Per-article settings let you set pricing and choose whether Reader Plans are available.

The purchase interface handles buyer authentication. Reader Plans can also be used alongside codoc’s one-time article purchases and tipping, giving readers different ways to access written content.

Payments and buyer access

Stripe handles payment processing. Listed payment options include credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Konbini. Transactions can be processed in JPY, USD, or EUR. Readers worldwide can purchase with a valid credit card.

To preview an article as a buyer, select “Sign in to restore purchase” and authenticate with a codoc account. Log out to view the article as a non-buyer.

Editor and presentation options

codoc supports Gutenberg and the Classic Editor with TinyMCE. In the Classic Editor, integration adds a codoc button to the toolbar. You can insert custom HTML before or after codoc tags, or specify a custom CSS file in Settings → codoc.

Permalinks are retrieved through get_permalink(). Replacement settings are available for reverse proxies or special routing.

Publishing and account management

Article content is stored on both WordPress and codoc. Publication status follows the WordPress article: publishing it also publishes the content on codoc, while an unpublished article stays unpublished there. Deleting the WordPress article makes its codoc content unpublished. WordPress featured images are used on codoc.

Creators manage revenue and customers through codoc.jp.

Installation and use

  1. Install and activate codoc, then connect it according to the codoc setup process.
  2. Open a WordPress post in Gutenberg or the Classic Editor. Add the codoc block or use the Classic Editor button.
  3. Place the content you want to protect below the block, then configure the article’s price or Reader Plan availability.
  4. Publish the post and manage revenue and customer information through codoc.jp.

Creators must reside in Japan, the United States, or the EU and have a bank account in the relevant country. Readers can purchase access from anywhere with a valid credit card.
