Raw HTML Pro: Protect WordPress Code with Limited Gutenberg Support

Keep selected code unchanged

Raw HTML Pro helps WordPress posts and pages retain custom HTML, JavaScript, and CSS when formatting changes could alter the code. Wrap content in [raw]...[/raw] to keep newlines from becoming paragraphs and straight quotation marks from turning into typographic quotes. A second raw-tag format works the same way and is not visible to visitors if Raw HTML is deactivated. It also protects selected content from formatting behaviors such as image smilies and character conversion.

In Visual mode, the Pro version displays code inside raw tags as a read-only placeholder. The original code returns when you switch to Text/HTML or when the post is displayed to readers.

Choose which WordPress filters run

Raw HTML adds checkboxes to the Edit Post screen for disabling selected filters on a per-post basis. These include wptexturize, which creates smart quotes and other typographic characters; automatic paragraph creation; image smilies; and convert_chars, which converts ampersands to HTML entities and adjusts some Unicode characters.

Set shortcode and excerpt behavior

Shortcodes inside raw blocks appear as plain text by default. To run them, add the shortcodes=1 attribute to the raw tag, as in [raw shortcodes=1].

Raw blocks are removed from automatically generated excerpts by default. To keep them in excerpts, add the RAW_HTML_KEEP_RAW_IN_EXCERPTS definition to wp-config.php.

Check editor and capability support

Raw HTML does not fully support the Gutenberg editor. Since WordPress 5.0, some features work only with the Classic Editor plugin. For posts with custom code, edit in Text/HTML mode; the Pro version also provides read-only placeholders when you need Visual editing.

Some features require the unfiltered_html capability. In a standard WordPress installation, Editors and Administrators have this capability. In Multisite, it is available by default only to the Super Admin.

Use raw tags in a post

Add Raw HTML Pro to WordPress, open a post or page in an available editor, and wrap the code you want to protect in raw tags. Select any per-post filters to disable, then save. When you use Visual editing, protected code appears in read-only placeholders.
