The
terracotta stove - a brief history
"The history of the terracotta stove leads
us to the Alps, where the first terracotta stoves were
made between the 11th and 13th century. Round, mug-like
vessels were incorporated in its walls to enhance heat-transfer.
There is ambiguous, sparse data of their presence before
the 11th century, but the terracotta stove is a European
invention, its history cannot be traced until the great
antique civilizations. The spreading of stoves took
place between the 13th and 14th century, when their
first representations appeared. In the Middle Age significant
centers were developed on the southern territory of
Germany, in the Czech kingdom and in Hungary."
